Women in business

5 Feb 2026 11:04 AM | Anonymous

Women entrepreneurs play a vital role in shaping modern economies and societies. However, according to research conducted by the Mastercard Index of Women Entrepreneurs, women-led businesses contribute only 37% of global GDP. In Australia, just one in three business owners are women, with numbers expected to grow. These figures highlight the critical importance of creating dedicated spaces that actively support and champion women entrepreneurs.

Despite their growing presence and impact, women entrepreneurs continue to face long-standing barriers within the business world, often navigating obstacles unique to their experiences. These challenges usually relate to securing funding, systemic biases that persist across sectors, building a reliable network, lack of mentorship, and balancing between work and family.

According to an article by the International Network for SMEs, women-led businesses are more likely to be concentrated in industries that are often perceived as having a lower impact on economic development. When combined with existing structural disadvantages, this further limits women’s opportunities and places them at a disadvantage when starting and scaling their own businesses.

Women entrepreneurs remain an underutilised catalyst for economic development. They create new employment opportunities and bring diverse perspectives to business problem-solving, driving innovation and growth. However, there remains a lack of awareness around the significant advantages that women entrepreneurs contribute to the business landscape.

ALBC recognises the importance of uplifting women and equipping them with the resources, support, and opportunities needed to gain a strong head start in entrepreneurship. By providing access to mentorship, education, networking platforms, and business development tools, ALBC aims to empower women to build confidence, overcome barriers, and successfully grow sustainable ventures.

Through these initiatives, ALBC is committed to fostering an inclusive environment where women entrepreneurs can thrive and contribute meaningfully to economic and community development.
